Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine was born and raised from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam was a back-up singer with Philadelphia International Records. Her father gave her an opportunity to be the curator at the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She together with her family then relocated into the famous landmark. She graduated in 2005 of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was a vocal music major. Sullivan started singing in the contralto section of the children's choir, then a few years later in the adult group. Sullivan was not exposed to secular music. She relates that she was singing in solos in the church, when someone advised her to join a gospel label. She was not prepared for the work. "Then McDonald's offered a competition to children from major cities. In the end, I got the chance to sing Accept What God Allows on It's Showtime Apollo. My fans were very supportive." She performed with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday celebration at 13. Sullivan was signed initially to Jive Records at the age 15. As a teenager, she was signed to Jive Records. The label recorded an complete album, but the album was never made available for release. Sullivan was later dropped by the labels. Missy Elliott was the producer for some tracks from Her debut album. Among them "Backstabbers" by Timbaland, which Elliott composed, was very popular.
